The illustration depicts an actual ancient amulet found in the Daugmale burial grounds and dating back to the 13th century. The waterbird is an important symbol in the Finno ugric mythology. The Livonian tribes living by the coast of the Baltic sea had a tradition of wearing zoomorphic bird amulets. They symbolized the human soul and showed respect to the creator of the world - a waterbird that brought up dirt from the bottom of the sea. The Baltic tribes adopted the custom of wearing this amulet as well and you can now too.
